World Homeless Day & World Mental Health Day: Supporting Families in Crisis

On October 10, we recognise not only World Homeless Day but also World Mental Health Day. These two critical observances highlight the interconnectedness of homelessness and mental health struggles faced by families in our communities. At Save the Family, we understand that a safe and stable home is vital for nurturing mental well-being, especially for children.

The Harsh Reality of Homelessness

In the UK, the statistics are staggering. In 2024, over 150,000 children are estimated to be living in temporary accommodation due to homelessness, a number that has risen sharply in recent years. Many families are forced into this situation due to domestic violence, job loss, or substance misuse. In fact, nearly 40% of homeless families report that domestic violence was a contributing factor to their situation.

These statistics tell a story of struggle, but they also highlight the resilience of families fighting to regain control of their lives. However, the impact of homelessness extends beyond physical displacement; it deeply affects mental health. Families experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression due to their circumstances.

Mental Health and Homelessness

The link between homelessness and mental health is undeniable. Children in unstable living situations face greater risks of developing anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues. In 2024, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 homeless children experience mental health problems, compared to 1 in 10 children in stable housing. The trauma associated with instability and uncertainty can leave lasting scars on young minds.

At Save the Family, we work tirelessly to address these issues holistically. We believe that supporting mental health is as crucial as providing shelter.
